Introduction: professional sound for a rooftop in the heart of Hamburg
Heaven’s Bar & Kitchen is located on the upper floors of the Tanzende Türme, a complex formed by two glass and steel towers that has become one of Hamburg’s architectural landmarks. Its tilted silhouette, inspired by a couple dancing tango, makes the building unmistakable. Completed in 2012, the building brings together offices, a hotel, leisure spaces and gastronomic concepts in a single complex.
The venue combines a restaurant, bar and rooftop terrace with panoramic views of the city, the harbour and the River Elbe. It hosts daily service, cocktails, private events and music, so each area required a sound solution adapted to its use and level of activity.
AV Connect GmbH handled the system planning, bringing its experience in audiovisual solutions, event technology, streaming, projection, sound and lighting. MKHS GmbH took on the integration and adapted the technical solution to the architectural and operational characteristics of the venue.
Challenge: weather resistance outdoors and discreet integration indoors
The project had to respond to very different uses within the same venue. In the restaurant and bar, the system had to support daily service with clear, balanced and pleasant reproduction, without interfering with conversation or the atmosphere of the venue. For private events, the installation had to provide greater headroom and adapt to situations with a higher level of activity.
The Heaven’s Nest terrace posed an additional challenge. As an elevated outdoor terrace in a city like Hamburg, the installation had to be prepared to operate in rain, humidity, wind and episodes of snow during the winter months. In addition, the system had to cover the space evenly and maintain stable operation in an exposed area, without interfering with the aesthetics of the venue or the views of the city.
The goal was for the sound to accompany each area of the venue naturally, from the indoor spaces to the elevated terrace, with a discreet, flexible installation prepared for different levels of use.
Solution: ARTEC and DECO systems for the interior and WR series for the terrace
For the bar and restaurant areas, four ARTEC-510, two ARTEC-322S, six ARTEC-306 and six DECO-65 were installed. This combination makes it possible to adapt coverage and sound level to the characteristics of each area, maintaining a natural listening experience during service and offering greater capacity when the space is used for events.
On the Heaven’s Nest terrace, six WR-9606-DX, 10 WR-8826-DX and two WR-218S-DX were installed. The DX versions are designed for fully exposed locations and incorporate a reinforced fibreglass coating that waterproofs the structure and protects it against humidity and corrosion. This construction helps maintain outdoor performance and preserve a precise sound response during the terrace’s daily use.
“The terrace needed an outdoor-ready solution, capable of maintaining stable performance in an area exposed to the weather. The WR series allowed us to combine resistance, coverage and sound quality without compromising integration into the space”.
Amplification and processing were configured with one INTEGRAL-MA1604, two INTEGRAL-M88, three INTEGRAL-A1604, one HA-4000, two HA-2700 and two INTEGRAL-A402. This architecture makes it possible to manage the different areas of the venue flexibly, optimise the performance of each system and facilitate overall control of the installation.
Conclusion: “a solution capable of supporting every atmosphere in the venue”
The installation responds to the needs of each area of the venue without breaking the continuity between spaces. Indoors, the system supports daily service with a discreet and balanced presence; on the terrace, the WR-DX versions provide the resistance required for an exposed area without sacrificing coverage or sound quality.
The result is a flexible solution designed to integrate into the real operation of the venue: music during service, private events, higher sound levels when the activity requires it and independent management of each area.
“The system had to work naturally in each area, without imposing itself in the restaurant and without falling short on the terrace. The combination of indoor systems and the WR series allowed us to maintain that continuity throughout the venue”.
