Viña Rock 2017

DAS Audio is back at the 2017 Viña Rock festival.

DAS Audio professional sound systems were back for yet another year at the Viña Rock Festival; the Spanish brand has ensured an intense and unrepeatable experience for festival-goers since 2012. This year, over 200,000 fans descended upon the town of Villarrobledo, Albacete to see a spectacular line-up of artists perform live.

The festival organizers were thrilled with this year’s event, calling the 2017 Viña Rock a “great success” despite the rain and cold weather. Rain was a factor from the set up of the stages two days before opening day and didn’t let up on the sound and lighting systems that served the 140+ performances that crossed the festival’s eight stages over the course of the event.

Fluge was once again called in to handle the audiovisual systems for the festival and worked hand-in-hand with DAS Audio to deploy systems from DAS Audio’s extensive product catalog on the festival’s two main stages. Repeating the same “twin” stage configuration as previous years, the main Negrita and Poliakov stages were set up side-by-side; here the sound technicians opted to deploy 48 large-format Aero-50 line arrays in a central formation that was “shared” by both stages. These systems were paired with 36 UX-221A subwoofers for the crucial low-frequency punch.

Front fill was handled by 12 Aero-20A line arrays groundstacked in pairs every two meters. The first line of relay towers behind the FOH featured eight Aero-50 each and were installed 120 meters out, while a second set of relay towers were rigged with eight Aero-40A each.

DAS systems were also brought in to handle the sound for three other festival areas: the Reggae and Hip-Hop stages as well as one of the tents. Sixteen Aero-40A line arrays were flown in linear hangs on either side of the Reggae stage, augmented by 18 LX-218CA and four UX-30A subwoofers, while 24 Aero-50 and 24 LX-218CA delivered flawless sound for the Hip-Hop stage. A total of 24 Aero-20A and eight UX-30A were rolled out for the tent.

Two LX-218CA and two Convert-15A were rigged on either side of each of these stages to handle side fill duties, while a veritable army of Road-12A and Road-15A stage monitors were used depending on each group and its needs. All DAS systems were monitored and managed by DASnet™ throughout the festival.

This massive set up took two intense days and over 50 people to finish, but the results were well worth the effort: both the installation team and DAS Audio’s sound engineers underscored the outstanding performance of the DAS systems despite a full week of rain.
