D.A.S. Audio professional sound systems at the Shenzhen Satellite Countdown

The city of Shenzhen in Southern China recently played host to the 2013 Shenzhen Satellite Countdown, an annual event that was held at the city’s Crystal Gymnasium, part of a massive sports complex built for the 26th summer Universiade in 2011. The arena was decked out with a youth carnival theme for the event and required a full light and sound solution to meet the expectations of the thousands of fans that descended upon the venue to see their favorite singers, bands and youth leaders. Local rental company SAG headed the sound installation and decided to deploy a range of D.A.S. line array systems to bring the sound for the event.

The Crystal Gymnasium, named after the building’s structure, which resembles a crystal stone, is a four-story arena that seats up to 12,000 people used for both sports and entertainment events. A massive stage was set up for the Shenzhen Satellite Countdown, dividing the audience area into three main sections to the left, right and front of the stage, an overlap that created a challenge for sound company SAG. The sound team’s solution was to bring in a host of D.A.S. Audio systems to ensure full coverage for both the audience and the performers.

A total of 24 D.A.S. Audio Aero 50 three-way line array speakers were flown 12 per side at approximately 18 m on opposite sides of the stage to provide clear sound to the audience area in front of the stage. An additional 16 D.A.S. Audio Aero 12A line array speakers were flown at around 20 m to cover the middle section of the audience, and were matched with six D.A.S. LX-218C double 18” subwoofers.

Side fill was handled by four D.A.S. Audio Aero 8A ultra-compact line arrays, ideal for near field applications. A number of monitor speakers, including four D.A.S. Audio Road 15As and four Aero 8As systems, were used to ensure precise sound for the performers. An Avid Venue D-show console took care of FOH monitoring.

Fans, artists, event organizers and the SAG sound team were pleased with the performance of the D.A.S. Audio line array systems at the Shenzhen Satellite Countdown. “Since the audience area and performing areas overlapped, the sound coverage and blind spots needed to be well controlled in order to provide a good balance,’ explained SAG CEO Zhang Bo. ‘We managed to attain well distributed sound with even coverage for the event.”
