Congress Center Katowice
The new International Congress Center in Katowice (Poland) with sound by D.A.S.
Adjacent to the city’s iconic multi-purpose arena and neighbor to the local museum and concert hall, the new International Conference Center in Katowice, Poland, is a multifunctional venue that solidifies Katowice's transformation into a bona fide culture hub. Taking over a revitalized post-industrial site, the new building offers facilities for a range of events, from congresses and conferences to trade fairs and performances. The design by Polish architecture studio JEMS was matched with a suite of cutting-edge technological solutions, including a state-of-the-art professional sound system drawn from D.A.S. Audio’s Artec 500 and Ceiling series of products.
Nearby Zabrze-based audiovisual company Shadok AV was commissioned to handle the sound solution at Katowice’s new International Conference Center. “The ICC was an important and difficult challenge for us”, says Jakub Kielar. The “innovative solutions incorporated into the building’s design, specifically the architectural specifications and finishing of each room, posed a challenge”, requiring a system that could provide excellent sound while integrating seamlessly into the rigid industrial aesthetic of the interior. “Our choice was D.A.S. Audio systems, which really matched all our requirements”.
The ICC’s Lecture Hall is used for both conferences and performances, requiring not only outstanding speech intelligibility but clear, robust music reproduction as well. After analyzing the specifics of the space the sound technicians opted to install eight D.A.S. Audio Artec 508A powered loudspeakers to ensure precise coverage and control with systems that blend seamlessly into the spacious room. Two self-powered Artec 510A were also brought in to ensure impeccable sound in every corner of the Lecture Hall. “Thanks to that choice we achieved great spoken sound quality, which is so important during conferences and meetings”, confirms Kielar. “Many artists also appreciate the great dynamics and clear sound these systems provide”.
The more intimate Banquet Hall and 18 Conference Halls posed an even greater challenge, with rooms that can be partitioned off into smaller spaces making it necessary to use ceiling speakers integrated into the unique ceiling structure in order to achieve full functionality for each space. D.A.S. Audio’s Ceiling Series were just the answer: these speakers can be flush mounted for harmonious integration into the acoustic conditions these rooms demand. A total of 29 D.A.S. CL-8T full range ceiling loudspeakers were installed in the Banquet Hall, while the Conference Halls were fitted out with 100 CL-5T speakers; in both cases the loudspeakers were mounted under a special net for maximum integration with the décor.
The combined performance of the powerful D.A.S. Artec 500 Series systems and the visually discreet yet robust Ceiling loudspeakers has proved a success since the International Conference Center’s inauguration in spring 2015. Shadok AV is pleased with the result. “By using D.A.S. Audio systems we were able to ensure outstanding sound coverage”, remarks Kielar, “with excellent sound distribution in any of the configurations of the Banquet and Conference Halls”.
